Then could possibly transition to alphabetical stuff, like they had with the 787 during design stages. Or they could make a whole new line, or go 7xx7.

That's what I thought, but prior to the negotiations with the People's Republic, it was known under a different designation. But still, Boeing may just choose to make a whole new nomenclature for their mainstream line of jets.
