Flying is actually the safest way to travel at this point in time.
You're more likely to be in a car craxh in a day in a car then on a plane for a day.
its being in a car you should be scared of.

no in the ocean. yes in cases where the planes wing falls of or something, or gets istakin for a USA plane over soviet airspace and gets shot down. but pilots train to regain control and belly land them in the water. there was a case in india were a 757 on take of 400ft of the ground flipped over and crashed at 220mph and everyone ran away and it exploded. no deaths.

OK guys, for those of you afraid of airplane crashes, let me break it down for you...
There are these wonderful little things called ELTs. Emergency Location Transmitters. Basically, distress beacons. They are activated when there is excessive stress on the airframe of the aircraft, namely, in a crash. When the ELT in the airplane goes off, it emits a warbling tone on the civilian ELT frequency (121.5), as well as a harmonic tone on the military ELT frequency (243.0). We rescuers can then use direction-finding equipment on the ground and in the air to find you. With an ELT going off, you are likely to be found within 12 hours of impact, often times less, depending on terrain. Without the ELT, the time is much greater.
There is this wonderful little thing called the Civil Air Patrol. The US Air Force Auxiliary. I am a member. In fact, I am qualified to perform ground search and rescue operations with them. When an ELT goes off, the SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite) system spots it. After 3 passes, the AFRCC (Air Force Rescue Coordination Center) calls a CAP incident commander to begin spinning up units to look for it. This happens about 2 hours after SARSAT picks up the initial signal.
Basically, if an ELT goes off, you are guranteed to be found. If the ELT doesn't go off, you are still guranteed to be found, it just takes a significantly longer time...

There's also the fact that more people die in car crashes than in plane crashes. It's amazing the number of planes in the air at any given time, and the amount of crashes in comparison.
I've got a similar beacon system in my ski-jacket that goes off when there is x-amount of pressure put on it for an extended period of time. IE, when trapped in an avalanche.

Good. Makes life easier for people like me. We used a training PLB in our graduation mission for National Ground Search and Rescue School with CAP yesterday. Their sound is slightly more annoying than that of an ELT

.
We actually picked up a real ELT going off on 121.5, but then realized it was just testing after the signal stopped after 30 seconds or so.

That's not what a black box is. A black box just records flight data, cockpit convorsation, etc. It doesnt transmit anything.
Spaceman3750
Aug 5 2006, 02:30 PM
The in-flight cockpit recorder is different than an ELT, as HerLoss stated. While an ELT is black (or so I've heard, I have only come in contact with training ELTs, which are orange) (don't ask me why they're black, bright, reflective orange would be much better for the sake of finding/disabling it once the search team has arrived on scene), it should not be confused with the "black box".

I was just thinking of that movie before I read that. Two hundred points say that it'll be the most overrated movie so far in the millenium. There will be more people watching this than any other movie, but that only means that this movie will have the most people complaining about how bad it was.

i know what your talking about now. if the plane goes down in the middle of the ocean, and 6 hours later, the government is scanning the bottom. the ELT gives of a silent sonar ping, so it can be detected by unmaned subs under water.
Spaceman3750
Aug 5 2006, 02:59 PM
Yeah, somewhat, but it's most useful on land.
Boats carry EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), basically a different form of an ELT.

A common misconception in flying is that when your engine dies, you fall out of the sky. Aircraft have the ability to glide for many many miles before they come in contact with the ground (provided the pilot follows proper engine-out procedures). It is entirely possible to lose all power at 30,000 feet and have a safe landing at an airport (albiet not the one you were headed to).

yeah, i saw this show on NGC and a 777 over the pacific was 7/8ths over the ocean and one of the engines was leaking fuel. the pilots didnt know and did an X-feed. thus wasting more fuel. then they ran out of fuel and glided back to land.ill try and find out more info on that.

Why is flying so scary to people. I dont think its that bad and it shouldnt be the most feared thing in the world, should it?
Reasons people don't like flying.
1. Airplane crashes are shown on the news in incredible detail, but car crashes are ordinary.
2. Many people have not flown before, and it is human to be afraid of the unknown
3. Media- Movies, TV shows, etc. have planes crashing on deserted islands, tribal areas, stuff like that.
Flying has a media induced fear in it. I really hate that, like fear of snakes. there are so many movies showing people getting eaten by snakes that people fear them, or think of the as gross. Snakes are awsome. Hence my love of dragons.
