OK, yes, I know, another pole. But I have plenty more, so get used to it. offtopic.gif

I want to see what the people think before I put my decision down.

Ugh... I wish I knew what you were talking about.

It'd be so awesome to play guitar. I'm seriously considering getting one and self-teaching.
Korps Commander
Major chords, obviously! They sound like a real song that way...
Herloss
They're both great groups of chords, and they go extremly well together. I mean, look at Hotel California. The first chord is A minor, and the second is E major.

All in all I'd say that my absolute favorite style of chord would be that of a power chord.

No offense meant, but I have to correct you when it comes to the song I am obsessed about. Hotel California is in the key of B, so it actually starts off in Bm, then progresses to a F#/Gb.....but I guess it doesn't really matter, does it?

And I should have made this pole where it was your favorite type of chord, because then it wouldn't be so hard to answer....

I have to agree with you on the powerchords. They are an easy alternative to the actual chord and make playing fast songs a breeze....plus, they sound awesome.

I am sorry, but when you play in standard tuning it is still Bm, F#, A, E, G, D, Em, F# and then the chorus is G, D, F#, Bm, G, D, Em, Then F#. I have both versions of Hotel California and can play along in B. I just now tried in A and I know for a fact that it does not work.
Herloss
I just tried it your way and it sounds nothing like it.
CODE

e-0--------0-----0--------0
b-1----1-------1-0----0----
g-2--2---2---2---1--1---1--
D-2--------------2---------
A-0--------------2---------
E-0--------------0---------

That's roughly how I play the opening two chords. Either my music theory and my hearing is screwed, or that's an Am,E and sounds just like it (not the same rhythm, but whatever...)

BTW, these code tags are frickin sweet for tabs.

Ok, this will be hard to read, but who cares. There are three guitars going here:
FREY 12-string acoustic, capo 2nd fret
WALSH 6-string acoustic, nylon string
FELDER 6-string acoustic, nylon string

This is the intro. Frey plays the top chords shown in parentheses,
while Walsh plays the bottom chords. Felder plays the intro riff you hear.

More things start happening here.
Frey's 12-string starts messing with picking patterns based around these chords:
Am E7 G D9 F C Dm E7

Felder plays something similar the intro 12-string part with his 6-string. He doesn't use a capo though.

Walsh plays this little thing after the first round of Felder's part:

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Here's where the vocals come in. And I am telling you it is in B.

I dont give a rat's arse how good you are at ripping tab off of some site. I also dont give a rat's arse how the Eagles play it themselves. I care about how one single person can play the song by themselves sounding extremly similar to the Eagles rendition, and It's by playing the progression I started tabbing out.

That is fine and I did not intend to make you nagry. I did not rip it off, I borrowed it, but that is not the point. I was not telling you how to play, I just said that was not how the Eagles played. And now that you said that you do not care, then it is all fine now. It was a very trivial thing to mention. My bad. oops.gif

I self tought myself!(took about a month.
guitar_freak22
I taught myself. It doesn't take very long if you really get into it. I have been playing for 6+ years now, and I have to say, I am not just real bad. I am not the best in any case though. I know a lot of people who are better than I am. Plus, playing the guitar is a chick magnet. Well, not at my school anyway, but that is the generalization. Course, no one really knows that I play guitar at my school, so...that could be it. I am entering next year's talent show. I WILL be winning first place. Hopefully. LOL
Herloss
I'm pretty much self taught. I used to go hang out with a guy at a local-ish guitar shop, and he'd just teach me random riffs and chords and stuff, and introduced me to tablature. I pretty much took over from there, but I like to go jam with him every so once and awhile.

Also, my sophomore year of high school I took a class entitled Beginner Guitar. Needless to say I blew right through it with no problems, and I pretty much took it because the class taught playing off of the treble staff instead of tab.
guitar_freak22
I am taking a class this year called Jazz Band. Hopefully, it will teach me how to play off of music sheets using a treble clef. This will be my sophomore year.

Being able to play off the staff is pretty cool, but you have to continue using if after the class, or you kind of forget it. Like, tab is pretty much self explanatory, and you dont need to know much to play off of it, but when you play off of a treble staff you have to know what notes correspond to what frets on the guitar, and be able to translate it in your head quickly.

On a side note, I made 10 bucks transposing the textbook we used into tab for a friend.

And on another side note, this coming year shall be my senior year.

So that is how you say it, treble staff. My mistake. That is probably what I will do to the book I get from Jazz Band. That way, I can see how it translates and memorize the corresponding notes. Tabs are a guitarist's best non-human friend.
Herloss
I just call it the treble staff because its a staff that used the treble clef. I dunno if that's actually the name for it.

Oh. I hate it when I do not know the correct terminology.
chuck
other cuz it depends on the mood trying to be conveyed in the song.

So very true. If you want a dark thought-provoking song, use minor chords. the minor chords seem to make a song sound more interesting. Especially when you switch from a major to that chord's minor. For example: You play an A# then an A#m and it sort of progresses the song along.

yeah, I love jazz band, the only down side is that you have to get to school an hour early.
Herloss
Our jazz band doesnt even have any regular class time. It's like an independant studies kind of thing where they have their own practices and stuff. Their only connection with the school really is that they have to do several preformances throughout the year, and they get a full credit for it.

Thing is that it's only like 5 people (acoustic bass, piano/keyboard, drum set, lead guitar, lead singer, and occasionally a rythm guitar), and it's not a learning class, you have to already know how to play and be good at it.
