Ok, so earlier today, I got an MSN popup from one of my friends. The message went something like "check out your pic on myspace! <insert url that I forget at the moment>". I opened it, and was notified that it could be a virus. Being paranoid, I decided to not run the program.

I asked my friend about it later, and he had absolutely no clue what I was talking about, and he didn't recall giving me any message recently.

Do any of you know if this is a new trick used by virus spreaders or whatever?

MSN has so many security holes. Your friend probobly just got some bug that sent that message out to everyone on his list. Dont touch it.

Herloss is correct. There are viruses that will send messages to others on your contacts list without knowing.

As long as you didn't click on the link, you should be fine.

Do not delete everything HijackThis lists; that could be DANGEROUS for your computer's health. It only detects possible ways that viruses/spyware can come onto your computer, not viruses themselves.

OK KC, first order of business: uninstall Messenger Plus! It is commonly known to be adware, carrying the Lop adware program. That could be what caused the popup, but I somewhat doubt it...

OK, now, boot into safe mode (tap F8 at startup) re-run HJT, tick the following entries, and press "Fix":



After you do this, go ahead and re-boot normally and post another HJT log .

Well, I'm a big fan of Sony, what do you expect?

Did you do that stuff?

It's toolbar adware, but you don't have to install it, all you have to do is press "decline" when the Terms and Conditions pop up, and then it installs without adware.

In his case, it's too late .

It also allows you to uninstall the adware without getting rid of the plugin. I've had personal experience here. But I personally gave him the instruction to decline the sponsor program, and once when he complained about system instability, I asked him about persistent "Casino Online" shortcuts on his desktop--a known sign of the LOP adware program--and he didn't have it. So that's not a problem.

And by the way, a general rule is never to accept any executable file without first confirming with the sender that s/he actually did send it. Here's a list of executable file type extensions: http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/a/fileextview.htm
That list is a bit paranoid, however. The Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents should be fine as long as you have macros disabled, which is the default setting in Windows XP. A good idea is to confirm with the sender before accepting any file where you don't recognize the file type.
