Could you explain the φ? I looked it up on wikipedia, nothing I could really understand because my math class sucks. x_x

φ is the greek letter "phi". It doesnt stand for anything, like pi or e do. (at least as far as I know). It's just a variable, like theta.

ya but pie is an infinite number,its so huge mathematicians had to call pie by its first numbers(3.14)
issac55
Well, is anyone besides Mynck or thisoldmage goin to bid?( so far, sense pi is an ifinite number, i round 3.14, to get 3! the bid stands at three! happy.gif)

The φ stands for the golden ratio. It's equivalent to ((1 + √5) / 2). The golden ratio is defined as the number x where (x = 1/x + 1). If you take the recipricol of the golden ratio and then add one to it, you get the golden ratio again. This number makes many appearences in nature and biology and all that good stuff.

φ ≈1.618033988749895

So that means that I bidded about 3.14 + 1.62 = 4.76 points

--edit---
im not understanding crap right now.so in final order, the bid is 5.5
Mynck

and in other news,you cant send . something points to others.
Mynck

issac55
twitch* *twitch* , im about to puke because im thinking to hard...points! bid points!
chuck
7 from me

what is the surprise?
Spaceman3750
Bid = x

x = sqrt(25) + 3
Qlumpa
Three shiny new rocks for the 10KP and the tomato.
issac55
i already have 2 rocks, why would i want more.....

the bid stands at .........,whatever spaceman posted happy.gif

a tomato?
and the auction last way.........to long...
there only so much someone will bid for a tomatoe and 10 kp

i'm already getting 5 kp for posting this y'know...
Mynck
I bid x too.

x^2 + 1 = 2x + 25
issac55
which is? happy.gif

---edit---
I will now throw in a rock and 10 more kp.with the suprise!
LeTuro
I bet the surprise is ^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^. There are that many letters in that order to the surprise. I'm sure.
issac55
shhhhhh!!!!
LeTuro
I'll bid 0 then.
issac55
i just wont give you the surprize then.
mr rubbish
i bid 2
Spaceman3750
QUOTE(Mynck @ May 25 2006, 11:24 PM)
I bid x too.

x^2 + 1 = 2x + 25
*

Hmm...

sqrt(x^2 + 1) = sqrt(2x + 25)
x + sqrt(1)^2 = sqrt(2x + 25)^2
x + 1 - 2x = 2x - 2x + 25
-x + 1 - 1 = 25 - 1
-x = 24
x = -24

According to this, you bid -24... What did I do wrong, anyone?
issac55
God dang it! im tired of this friggen x bidding! bid points!12345!!??!?!. dry.gif lets start over.

I bid 5kp to keep my items.

what the hell is the next WHOLE POINTS BID !
Anonymous
I bid 6 pts.
issac55

x + 1 - 2x = 2x - 2x + 25
-x + 1 - 1 = 25 - 1
-x = 24
x = -24

When you said that
√<span style="text-decoration: overline;">x2 + 1</span> = x + √<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>2

That doesn't work.
(x + 1)2 = x2 + 2x + 1

Here's the solution:
x2 + 1 = 2x + 25
x2 - 2x - 24 = 0
(x - 6)(x + 4) = 0
(x - 6) = 0 or (x + 4) = 0
x = 6 or x = -4

Even though neither of those answers were higher than the last bidding amount. tongue.gif
