φ is the greek letter "phi". It doesnt stand for anything, like pi or e do. (at least as far as I know). It's just a variable, like theta.

ya but pie is an infinite number,its so huge mathematicians had to call pie by its first numbers(3.14)

Well, is anyone besides
Mynck or thisoldmage goin to bid?( so far, sense pi is an ifinite number, i round 3.14, to get 3! the bid stands at three!

The φ stands for the golden ratio. It's equivalent to ((1 + √5) / 2). The golden ratio is defined as the number x where (x = 1/x + 1). If you take the recipricol of the golden ratio and then add one to it, you get the golden ratio again. This number makes many appearences in nature and biology and all that good stuff.
φ ≈1.618033988749895
So that means that I bidded about 3.14 + 1.62 = 4.76 points

Hmm...
sqrt(x^2 + 1) = sqrt(2x + 25)
x + sqrt(1)^2 = sqrt(2x + 25)^2
x + 1 - 2x = 2x - 2x + 25
-x + 1 - 1 = 25 - 1
-x = 24
x = -24
According to this, you bid -24... What did I do wrong, anyone?

x + 1 - 2x = 2x - 2x + 25
-x + 1 - 1 = 25 - 1
-x = 24
x = -24
According to this, you bid -24... What did I do wrong, anyone?
When you said that
√<span style="text-decoration: overline;">x
2 + 1</span> = x + √<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>
2That doesn't work.
(x + 1)
2 = x
2 + 2x + 1
Here's the solution:
x
2 + 1 = 2x + 25
x
2 - 2x - 24 = 0
(x - 6)(x + 4) = 0
(x - 6) = 0 or (x + 4) = 0
x = 6 or x = -4
Even though neither of those answers were higher than the last bidding amount.
