Could you explain the φ? I looked it up on wikipedia, nothing I could really understand because my math class sucks. x_x

φ is the greek letter "phi". It doesnt stand for anything, like pi or e do. (at least as far as I know). It's just a variable, like theta.

The φ stands for the golden ratio. It's equivalent to ((1 + √5) / 2). The golden ratio is defined as the number x where (x = 1/x + 1). If you take the recipricol of the golden ratio and then add one to it, you get the golden ratio again. This number makes many appearences in nature and biology and all that good stuff.

When you said that

That doesn't work.
(x + 1)² = x² + 2x + 1

Here's the solution:
x² + 1 = 2x + 25
x² - 2x - 24 = 0
(x - 6)(x + 4) = 0
(x - 6) = 0 or (x + 4) = 0
x = 6 or x = -4

Even though neither of those answers were higher than the last bidding amount.
