Goood life to, do nothing. Ads make money, you see something interesting click on it...
That's what you think. Yes, webmasters do get flexible work schedules, but it's not "the easy life".

still, I just though about it,
why do ads need to be displayed,
the only ones whereit would really matter are the google ones, which give you money per click. Others would rely on the website in question, maybe checking if the ad is displayed properly, but nothing else. Just common speculation, but still.
Advertising models rely on:
-Pay Per Click
-Pay Per Impression
-Pay Per Lead
Pay Per Click, is the model you see with the Google Ads. You already know this model, so I don't have to explain.
Pay Per Impression pays you every time the ad is displayed; if more people use adblock, the ad is displayed less, resulting in lesser earnings. Usually, the payouts are somewhere around $0.30-$0.60 per 1000 impressions.
Pay Per Lead pays you every time someone uses your ad to do an action, for example, sign up for a website, or buy a item. This pays the most per lead, but it's harder to gain leads.
Pay Per Click is the middle ground, which is why many people use it.
You were thinking of people paying for duration, true, that is a model, but almost nobody uses it. People usually rotate their ads, instead of putting up only one banner ad. Also, people paying for duration usually pay the amount they pay because they can expect a number of impressions or clicks. If suddenly there aren't as many impressions, the person will have to lower the price for the "pay by time".
